Serous fluids: Bilirubin measurement in peritoneal or drainage fluids is considered a useful test for detecting the presence of bile leaking through a defect in the biliary ducts. For postoperative hepatectomy patients, a ratio of drain fluid total bilirubin to a concurrent serum total bilirubin = 3.0 indicates bile leakage according to the International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS).
